Light at ten

From overman foundation overmanfoundation@gmail.com date18 December 2010 12:56 subject From Overman Foundation: Sri Aurobindo's First Poem
Dear Friends,
Sri Aurobindo was once asked, in 1939, during the course of a conversation by one of his disciples: “When did you begin to write poetry?” He answered: “When my two brothers and I were staying at Manchester. I wrote for the Fox family magazine. It was an awful imitation of somebody I don’t remember.”
The magazine which Sri Aurobindo had referred to was the Fox’s Weekly which saw the light of the day on 11 January 1883. And the poem of Sri Aurobindo, titled Light, which was deeply inspired by P. B. Shelley’s The Cloud, was published in the very first issue of 11 January 1883. Let’s recall that in 1883 Sri Aurobindo was barely ten years of age.
We take the opportunity of sharing this poem with you all. To read the poem, please click on the following link: http://overmanfoundation.wordpress.com/2010/12/18/sri-aurobindos-first-poem/

Intellectual Roots of the Independence Movement in India: 1893-1918 by Dr Prithwindra Mukherjee

from Prithwindra Mukherjee Prithwindra@aol.com to "Tusar N. Mohapatra" tusarnmohapatra@gmail.com date 26 October 2010 14:10 subject
Bhâi Tusâr, Thanks.
Enclosing a translation of Mr Attali's foreword. As you know, Mr Attali had been appointed advisor by former President François Mitterand, and is considered to be foremost among Western thinkers today. Regards.
Prithwindra Mukherjee
A Fascinating Thesis
Jacques Attali
No one leaves this great book by Prithwindra Mukherjee, unaffected by it.

It is the work of a great intellectual, sociologist, writer, musicologist; a thesis begun under Raymond Aron and completed under Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, supported by the biggest shots of French university, like Annie Kriegel. A wonderful instance of the quality of a university, which can  welcome within its fold someone coming from somewhere else and offering to France - in exchange - more than what she has given him.

This fascinating book constitutes first of all a passionate tribute to a grandfather, activist and martyr, whose place in the history of India has not been recognised as it deserved to be, in the front rank of the freedom fighters; simultaneously with a look for details, lucid, distancing itself, concerning a period very little known, that which, at the bend of the 19th to the 20th century, opens before India the path leading to the awareness of her identity, and the necessity of her fighting for independence.

For too long a lapse, indeed, people have wished to think that Gandhi's non-violence had been enough to drive out the armies of the colonizer. That is not true. Before Gandhi succeeded in animating the vast social movement of the 1930s, there had been the great intellectual movement of Aurobindo, of Bagha Jatin, and of all those who strove by their side, at times up to death, enabling India to become aware of herself.

This book is essential for understanding what today's India is, even in her violence,  and to put back in their due - the first - place, all the dreamers who, from Aurobindo to Tagore, from Gandhi to Patel  have trodden diverse paths  leading her to independence, in its diversity.

It is essential as well for understanding the very special role that intellectuals played in all freedom movements, in India and elsewhere. And first of all their role in kindling the perception of the national idea, often artificial, often imaginary : here, Mr Mukherjee explains very well their driving power and the conditions of their crystallisation.

Essential, at last, for understanding the role of intellectuals in History, so often carried off by the consequences of their ideas, swept out, chased away, censored, by the very persons who implement their concepts.

Become, by fluke of history, an exceptional musicologist and a great poet, having been set to music by the greatest musicians of our time, the author of this book reminds us that humanity is one, that music, poetry and politics are mere dimensions among other than human condition, and we have as yet much more to learn from India. Let France take advantage of it and establish relations necessary for our future. Jacques Attali

Deference and respect and awe-filled genuflections

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "This is Sri Aurobindo’s Ashram not yours and not P...":
Also, about the deferential kow-towing to Pranab-da. I have observed and experienced that the victim in such situations, the moment he/she has the opportunity, often turns around and looks for others to give him/her the same deference and respect and awe-filled genuflections. They feel that they have paid their dues to Pranab-da and so now others in the same "junior" position to themselves as they were vis-a-vis Pranab-da need to compensate them in the same manner. After all, why should others get away and enjoy equality and freedom when they themselves could not? That would be patently unfair according to them. Since they have paid their dues and played by the rules of the game, others cannot go scott free without paying the necessary toll. From what I have seen MDG etc. are following this human psychological pattern to the T. So I hope you will understand me if I take the claims of the dawn of the golden age of guru-bhai-hood and equality post-Pranab with a massive helping of salt. Posted by Anonymous to Savitri Era Open Forum at 9:32 PM, October 20, 2010

Concentric layers of consciousness make up the Universe

I don't know what to make of Satprem's remarks.  Did he say this out of spiritual insight or was it just speculation?  Sri Aurobindo and the Mother repeatedly said that the future is a play of Forces - that everything is not completed worked out.   As you (i.e. Anon) may have read in their works, there are concentric layers of consciousness from the gross to the subtle which make up the Universe.   It is only when an event is fixed in the subtle-physical that one can say with certitude that it will manifest in a certain fashion.   Everything in the worlds above is subject to modification.
For instance, both Sri Aurobindo and the Mother had seen India's freedom in their visions around 1910 but they did not know until much later that there would also be a partition.
Dear Friends, It gives me immense bliss to announce to you all that Overman Foundation has received two precious gifts from two senior sadhikas of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry. And the gifts are a sari with a blouse worn by the Mother and a piece of cloth belonging to Sri Aurobindo.
These rare gifts will adorn the shrine of Overman Foundation and be brought out for public darshan on special occasions.
With warm regards, Anurag Banerjee

Peter Heehs is studying and practising Sri Aurobindo’s Yoga

Comment posted by: RY Deshpande Re: An Open Letter ... Manoj Das’s Disastrous Advice

Manoj Das Gupta, Managing Trustee, Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust, wrote on 21 June 2010 a letter to the Regional Registration Officer, Pondicherry, for the extension of the visa of Peter Heehs by five years. This looks strange, to say the least. He had asked Peter Heehs to stay away from the Archives a few months ago, but did not officially assign work in any department of the Ashram. Now here’s a letter of recommendation! If Peter Heehs is here for the purposes of “studying and practising Sri Aurobindo’s Yoga", as the letter states, we do not know in what exact capacity he is here—as a private individual or as a member of the Ashram. It is obligatory for the Managing Trustee to clarify the point. ~ RYD

Birth anniversary celebration of Sri Aurobindo in Puducherry

A large number of people from different parts of the country today thronged Sri Aurobindo Ashram here on the occasion of the 138th birth anniversary of the saint philosopher.

Followers of Sri Aurobindo sat in meditation before the samadhis of him and The Mother (his spiritual collaborator) and also visited the room where the saint philosopher had carried on his spiritual works.

Aurobindo, who founded the ashram in 1926, had evolved a new method of spiritual practice, which he called the Integral Yoga. He died on

Even now things can be mended

An Open Letter to Manoj-baboo from RY Deshpande Comment posted by: RY Deshpande >> Had the Trust gone ahead and swiftly evicted Heehs out…>>
Even now things can be mended to a large extent if the action of eviction is taken by the trustees. Instead, what they are doing is, give him repeatedly certificates of good conduct and of invaluable services rendered by him to the Ashram. Which only means that the full blame for the divide will have to be put at the door of their office. They will have to take the responsibility on them. If they realize that such a divide is contrary to the ideals and practices in the Mother’s work, they should act at least now particularly after the issue having become public. ~ RYD

School Website launching day 15th July 2010
The 'Sri Aurobindo Institute of Integral Education' (SAIIE) is a special Institute aiming at integral development of students, founded on the educational principles and thoughts of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. This institute was set up on 15th July 1970 by then Sri Aurobindo Sankruti Sansad Trust in Bhubaneswar for dissemination of the aims and objectives of the Philosophy of Integral Education as done in Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education, Pondicherry. A total perfection is the ultimate aim.
What we set before us, as our ideal is the Divine Life upon earth. In the real sense, ours is an attempt at evolving newer ways of learning and thinking and it is also an attempt towards going beyond the structural schooling into a joyful freedom of inner growth that would flow from within to without. This Novel System richly deserves unstinted encouragement with all generous support to build up a “Better Tomorrow for the Mankind” as a whole.
It is not for our family, it is not to secure a good position, it is not to earn money, it is not to obtain a diploma, that we study. We study to learn, to know, to understand the world, and for the sake of the joy that it gives us.       - The Mother
